FAQs
Electric sterilizers make the process simple—just plug them in and go. They include built-in heating element so you get consistent, reliable results with minimal effort. Standard sterilizers use an external heat source, like a gas or electric burner, giving you more control and flexibility. They’re a great choice for hands-on users or anyone who prefers an option that works well in off-grid setups.
An indoor stovetop that is electric, gas or flat top range will work. Do not use a glass top stove as that will damage the surface. For separate heating sources, use 12,000-24,000 BTUs. Do NOT use an induction stovetop.
Nemco (~$360) and Cadco (~$180) burners from Amazon are recommended. Nemco has better heat transfer.
No. Electric sterilizers are not designed for pressure canning. Their heating and cooling cycles differ from those required for safe pressure canning. Natural cooldown kills ~30% of C. botulinum spores.
All American 1930 sterilizers have multiple built-in safeguards. A steam gauge to monitor pressure and know when it is safe to open. A control valve to vent air properly during the cycle. Wing nuts and bayonet clamps to lock the lid securely in place. An overpressure plug and relief valve to automatically release excess pressure if needed. All housed in durable cast aluminum with a metal-to-metal seal for long-term reliability without gasket failures.
Regular checks keep your All American 1930 sterilizer operating safely and holding proper pressure.
Before every use. Inspect the metal-to-metal sealing surfaces, overpressure plug, and make sure the steam gauge opening is clear.
Monthly: Check that air flows freely through the air exhaust tube. Clean if needed.
As needed: Clean the control valve and remove mineral buildup. Replace it if it cannot be cleaned. Inspect wing nuts, pins, and clamps for wear or damage.
Every 6 months: Replace the overpressure plug, even if it looks fine.
Yearly: Replace the steam gauge if you notice fogging, corrosion, or inaccurate readings.
Every 3 years: Replace the excess pressure relief valve in normal use.
If the unit struggles to build or maintain pressure, or you notice cracks or damage, contact customer support at 920-686-2701 or customerrelations@wafco.com.

You may use distilled water to rinse out the unit or use lime remover. This can be found at hardware stores or online. Do not use CLR, Barkeepers Friend works well.
You should apply a thin layer of olive oil to the metal-to-metal seal before each use.
We cannot instruct customers on recalibration. You must send in your sterilizer for service.
Before replacing: Add a couple drops of penetrating oil at the steam gauge base where the threads enter the cover. Soak for about 10 minutes.
1. Using a 9/16” wrench, remove the gauge by turning it counterclockwise.
2. Apply a couple drops of olive oil to the threads of the new steam gauge. (Inspect the threads in the cover to make sure they’re clean and free of debris).
3. Turn gauge in clockwise by hand until finger tight.
4. Using a 9/16” wrench, turn the gauge an additional 1-1.5 turns until the gauge is facing the front of the cover. Do not overtighten.

3003-0 Aluminum.
This is caused by ejector pin during manufacturing. Stamped with numbers 1–4.
Yes. It’s safer to underpower than overpower. Element won’t heat as much.
Rated at 28 PSI with ±2 PSI tolerance.
The unit is either out of calibration or the thermoswitch no longer works. Please contact us for a quote or warranty replacement on parts.
Not enough water was used during the cycle. The water must be filled up to the machine water line or at least 1 inch above the highest point of the element. Please contact us to purchase a replacement element or warranty replacement.
If your lid won't sit flat, tighten the wing nuts two at a time across from each other until the gap is even, then tighten them all again twice.
Instructions are in the manual (page 21). Use the claw of a hammer on the prong-cover it with a washcloth to prevent damage to your canner or the seal. You may have left the weight on too long or didn’t apply enough lubricant. Or you can use a wooden flat spatula to prevent damage. Use a towel.
The thermoswitch is possibly out of calibration and needs to be recalibrated. We can no longer instruct customers how to recalibrate the sterilizers. Please contact us at 920-686-2701 or customerrelations@wafco.com
Vent pipe may not be clear, remove and inspect. If vent pipe is free of debris, increase heat.
